Red Sounds Like A High F

Neil Harbisson was born with a rare vision condition called achromatopsia; complete color blindness.

"Since 2004, an antenna sticks out of my head that allows me to hear the color spectrum, from near infrared to near ultraviolet. My head has turned into a music box. I can hear the sky, I can listen to my mother's eyes and I can hear rainbows.

I don't feel that I'm using technology, I don't feel that I'm wearing technology, I feel that I am technology. I don't perceive my antenna as a device, I perceive it as a part of my body, I perceive it as an organ."

So these would sound like 440 Hz and under (F# and under). Earplugs, anyone?

Countdown: VIENNA FAIR

Carbon 12 is going to be at Vienna Fair this year. 10 - 13 October 2013. Will you?

Where to find us: Booth E6

This will be an exhibition of art for art. The variety in medium encourages remembrance that whichever format it begins, it always ends with the visual.

Bernhard Buhmann: Dreamy, colourful, dense paintings celebrating the surrealist inner world, Gulliver-and-Lilliputian style.

Ghazel: Mixed media paper and ink works, maps, black and a sensation of suffocation discussing the contemporary problematic of displaced identity.

Sara Rahbar: Assemblage and sculptures with carefully collected "found" war-souvenirs, discarded objects and self-cast bronze limbs; all kinds of heavy.

Anahita Razmi: Pop-culture appropriation dealing with identity and gender in humorous video and performance mediums; one watch isn't enough.

Artist talks included.

Top 500

Carbon 12 Dubai may have been around for 5 years (this November!) but it is still making waves not only in the UAE contemporary art scene.

Modern Painters magazine published its annual "Top 500 Galleries Worldwide" and guess who is in it. Check out the article: Modern Painters

Carbon 12 represents a slew of international institution-grade artists, many of whom work large, and readers won't be disappointed by Gil Heitor Cortesao's triptych, representing Carbon 12 this year in Modern Painters.  Cortesao (b. 1967) is a Portugese painter who paints big, heavy, and light all at once (light because he paints on plexiglass framed by actual window frames) to create realistic but barren architectural spaces. A little 70's, a little futuristic, it is sort of like waking up to find that you are the only person left. At least you're in a cool space though.

You also might notice that Cortesao's work has the similar "house-after-the-party's-over" feeling as influential 70's photographer Jeff Wall's work below (exhibited as a lightbox, creating the same eerily luminiscent effect as Cortesao).

Just saying.
